Questions

QUESTIONS

1.- YES / NO QUESTIONS:

Cuando el verbo principal es el verbo to be o bien tiene un verbo modal (have, can, would, etc.) invertimos la secuencia "sujeto - verbo" a "verbo - sujeto".
Are you ready, Vicky?   ...   Yes, nearly
May I use your phone?   ...   Yes, of course.

Cuando el verbo principal no es to be ni modal entonces usamos la forma auxiliar "do, does, did".
La secuencia sería: Auxiliar   -   sujeto   ---   verbo....
Does Mark play golf?
Did you like the concert?
Does Mark plays golf?
Did you liked the concert?

2.- WH - QUESTIONS

Wh-question son palabras pregunta. Las más usuales son:
Who, what, which, whose, where, when, why y how.
When can we travel safely?
How does the radio work?

What time is your friend arriving?
What kind of club  is it?
How often do you go out?
How long will the meeting last?
How much money did you spend?
What color is your toothbrush
How old is your sister?
How far is the beach?
How many televisions do you have?

Ojo.- Usamos how much si el sustantivo es incontable o how many si el sustantivo es contable.

Who are we waiting for?
Who did you go out with last night?

Usamos "what ... for" para preguntar acerca de la finalidad y es similar a why.
What are these bricks for?

Usamos "what ... like" para preguntar si algo es bueno o malo, interesante o aburrido...
what is the place like where you live?
what's Melanie like?                She is very nice (She is a nice person)

How's Melanie?                        She is fine, thanks. (She is happy, ...)

                                     SUJETO                                         OBJETO
Who rang you?                                                   who did you ring?
who is helping you?                                            who are you helping?
who was talking to you?                                     who were you talking to?
what wine goes with fish?                                   what does this color go with?
how many people came past?                              How many people did you see?

6.- WHO, WHAT O WHICH

Usamos what o which antes de un sustantivo pero no who.
What si el numero de respuestas es amplio y which si no lo es.
What books do you read?
which finger did you break?

Usamos which seguido de one, ones y of pero no who o what.
You can have a photo. which one would you like?
you can have some of the photos. Which ones would you like?
which of this photos would you like?

Who siempre se refiere a personas.
Who did you see?

what did you see?                       what doctor did you see?

Which doctor/film did you see?
